We have been camping in Sequim, Washington, more specifically at the Dungeness Recreation Area. This campground is adjacent to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. This protects the Dungeness Spit and also hosts the New Dungeness Lighthouse which is at the end of the spit. This natural sand “spit” is said to be one of the longest in the world. This area is beautiful and surprisingly chilly. Much cooler than the Mount Rainier area we previously visited. We needed to breakout some autumn clothes to wear, not just in the morning, but all day around the campground. The campground itself has numerous views of the Juan de Fuca strait. Unfortunately for us, the Canadian wildfires that brought smoke to Mount Rainier also has travelled to the Olympic Peninsula. So we decided that it best to first explore some of the wonderful waterfalls in the park.
The Madison Falls flows to the Elwha River.
The Marymere Falls is near the large and popular Lake Crescent and Lake Crescent Lodge.
The next day we ventured up to the most popular mountain overlook in Olympic National Park at Hurricane Ridge. From this vantage point one is able to view the snow covered Olympic Range, weather or smoke permitting. The range includes such peaks as Mt. Seattle, Mt. Ferry, Mt. Fitzhenry, and Mt. Olympus at 7980 feet.
Even above 5000 feet, Hurricane Ridge was much warmer than at our campground at sea level! After a short hike we drove down the very curvy road back to the Sequim area.

We really enjoyed the area. There were many things we wanted to do but decided not to spend all of our time in the car. Olympic is a very large park with parts all the way to the ocean. We missed the rain forest and Sol Duc. Hopefully we can visit down the road.
